In September 2008 a new single legal framework for early years care and education, known as THE EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE (EYFS) was introduced, covering children from birth until their 5th birthday.
EYFS sets out the background, legal basis and gives details of the learning and development requirements, as well as the welfare requirements that all providers of early years services for young children must meet.
From September 2012 the Statutory Framework was fully revised, and was updated again in September 2014.
The learning and development requirements include early learning goals. There are seven areas covered by the early learning goals:
Communication and language
Expressive arts and design
Understanding the world
Personal Social and emotional development
